Benny Carter died peacefully early Saturday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after a brief illness. Although physically weak, he remained completely lucid and enjoyed speaking with many of his friends worldwide over the past few weeks. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Morroe Berger - Benny Carter Jazz Research Fund, Institute of Jazz Studies, Dana Library, Rutgers University, Newark, NJ 07102.

Tribute concerts were held in New York on September 15 at Saint Peter's Church, in Los Angeles on September 28 at UCLA's Schoenberg Hall, and in Chicago on November 23 by the Chicago Jazz Orchestra featuring Frank Wess at the Harold Washington Library Center.
